Oil Boiler Servicing

An oil boiler that hasn’t been serviced doesn’t usually stop working. It just quietly gets worse — a sooty nozzle here, a partly blocked filter there — until one cold morning it locks out and you’re without heat and hot water. Nearly every winter lockout we attend was avoidable at the last service.

What an oil boiler service includes

A service is a proper strip and set-up, not a look and a tick. Pulling the baffles and cleaning the heat exchanger properly takes a couple of hours, not the twenty minutes a quick once-over takes — and you get the readings in writing at the end so you can see what was actually done.

• Combustion analysis with a calibrated analyser, and the burner set to the manufacturer’s figures — not left where it was found
• New fuel filter every time, and a new nozzle whenever it needs one — between them they cause most lockouts
• Baffles and heat exchanger cleaned down, so you’re not paying to heat a layer of soot
• Photocell, electrodes and pump pressure checked and adjusted
• Tank, bund, fuel line and fire valve inspected — splits, corrosion, weeping joints and a fire valve that still works
• Controls, thermostat and timer checked so the system runs when you actually want it to
• A written record of the readings, and a straight answer on anything that needs attention
