Cost Guide
Oil Boiler Service: Cost and What’s Included (2026)
An oil boiler needs a service every year. This guide covers what affects the cost, what an OFTEC registered engineer should do on the visit, and why the service matters more on oil than on gas.
What affects the cost
Oil boiler service prices vary a lot from firm to firm. Most of the difference is in what gets done on the visit. The price for your boiler depends on:
- The make, model and age of the boiler, and whether it’s internal, external or a kitchen model
- Whether it’s a combi or a heat-only boiler
- How much soot there is to clean out, which goes up when a service has been missed
- Whether the tank, fuel line and fire valve are checked on the same visit
- Whether the price includes VAT. Plenty of oil firms quote without it.
What should be included
A proper oil boiler service is a strip-down, not a look-over. When you compare prices, compare what’s included. You should get:
- A new fuel filter, and a new nozzle when the old one is worn
- The baffles and heat exchanger cleaned of soot
- The photocell, electrodes and pump pressure checked
- The burner set up with a combustion analyser, and the readings written down for you
- The tank, bund, fuel line and fire valve checked for splits, weeping joints and corrosion
- The controls and thermostat checked
Why the service matters more on oil
Most oil boiler lockouts are caused by a worn nozzle, a blocked filter or a dirty photocell, and all three are dealt with on a service. An oil boiler that hasn’t been serviced tends to lock out in the first cold spell of the winter, when engineers are busiest. OFTEC and the boiler makers advise a service at least once a year.
